Works on the 43-kilometre section from Kisumu to Kakamega has been completed while the 40km Kakamega – Webuye section is near completion with about 80 per cent complete.

Local traders say the highway upgrade has reduced hours spent on the road from Kakamega to Eldoret, Bungoma and Kitale. “Initially, the road was full of potholes and one could spent about two hours travelling from Kakamega town to Kaburengu junction, however, things have changed for the better,” says Florence Mukabana, a local trader.

Limited housing

In 2018, the county government of Kakamega started an ambitious Ksh3billion housing project. This is after realizing the huge housing problem in Kakamega that make it difficult for investors to put up more investments there and also make individuals seeking rental units to struggle.

Governor Wickliffe Oparanya is quoted to have said, “There is a big shortage of housing in Kakamega. We don’t have decent houses. This has forced us to look into the problem by putting up modern houses,”
