The three billion Kenya shillings project is one of the big projects that Kisumu City is witnessing. The once vibrant Kisumu Port is headed for good times after the government embarked on a Ksh.3 billion upgrade that will see Kenya Ports Authority construct 1000 capacity container yard as well as an 8.8 million litres capacity oil jetty. This will transform Kisumu into East Africa region’s petroleum export hub.
The upgrade will also see the construction of s ship assembly yard and a dry dock. Upon completion, there will be increased commerce in the region with ships expected to ply Lake Victoria with some ships already assembled.
The Kisumu Port is expected to handle over 95000 tonnes of Cargo by 2022 according to Kenya Ports Authority. The neighboring ports like Jinja (Uganda) and Mwanza (Tanzania) are also upgrading to accommodate the increased business from Kisumu port. Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo are some other countries expected to benefit from the port.
Organizations will be looking for offices
With at least six countries expected to benefit directly from Kisumu Port, more organizations are likely to come in to benefit from the increased commerce.
